The most important part of songwriting is writing something that will resonate with the listener on an emotive level. A great song can touch people in ways that other things in life can't. The art of effective songwriting is relating to people. Therefore, if you're not a great musician and don't understand musical theory you can still be a great songwriter as long as you understand how to relate emotion to the listener.
